Cairns light tackle fires

With the presentation held last night its a bit early to go chasing the official tournament report but a quick update on the winners and grinner and most importantly the fantastic fishing from the last several days off Cairns.

Total tournament stats in the region of 247 tags for 35 boats in 3 days has hit a new high for North Queensland. To put into perspective, in the same comp last year only 59 fish were tagged. The previous benchmark for a great tournament was 178 tags in 2014.  In 2013 there were only 40 tags for the entire comp and they beat this easily this year just halfway through the first day!

Tournament winners were the team on Levante with Capt. Chris “Sharky” Miles and his team from South Australia including Cairns regular Ralphy Czabayski with 23 tags. Runners up were the Sandy family team on Amokura with 20tags. Full tournament update to come including U7.5m winners.

There were some big days fishing during the comp. The leaders all had giant days on day 1 with Levante on 11, Amokura on 9, and Bounty Hunter on 7.  Amokura had a big day 2 to take the lead adding 8 tags, but Levante stormed home on the final day adding 8 themselves. Mackay’s Emma Kate team also had a cracking final day with 8 tags to give them Champion Out of Zone Boat (11 tags overall).

I was only out for a short time but snagged some photos  (above & previous report). Full gallery here.
