Sunshine Coast Billfish

The annual run of small black marlin and sailfish has well and truly begun on the Sunshine Coast with some boats already recording impressive numbers.  The first report that heralded the start of the hot fishing came from Rob “Smithy” Smith’s Capricorn who tagged 9 blacks fishing off Noosa on November 24.  Boats are recording mostly blacks with the odd sailfish mixed in.

These blacks are part of the summer southern migration with fish moving down from the spawning grounds along the Australian east coast with the EAC (East Australian Current) following the bait and traditionally showing up here in November – so right on cue. And with small blacks still being caught off Mackay and Fraser Island there seems like there are still plenty more to come.

The fish are ranging between 12 and 25kg.

Last week David McMaster’s Pole Dancer recorded 3 blacks and a sail while Daniel Barker’s Raising Havoc has been on point with 4 from 4 followed by a 7 from 8 in a hot morning bite which included a sail all for Josh Allwood on the rod. Before the weekend’s weather event, Jarrod King’s Flatliner went 5 from 5 off Noosa with Alex Fenwick on the rod.

Mackay: Michael White’s Rehab caught a black and a sail while Tony Wilson’s Hardline reported 4-3-2 black marlin over the weekend before this one gone.

Fraser Island (inside): Hervey Bay Sportfishing Andrew “Chozza” Chorley reports juvie black marlin fishing on the flats inside Fraser Island has been great this December. Here’s a photo from their last trip before the blow going 2-1-1 pitching garfish. Fishing inside the island has been great for the small blacks and Liv Woodgate put Chozza’s new Gotcha Boat Hire 4.5m Polycraft to the test releasing her first solo black.
