Gamex, Exmouth – Day 1 & 2 Recaps

gamex-exmouth-day-1-2-recaps

With thanks to Ben Knaggs – fresh from the Gamex action..

GAMEX Day 1, Sunday March 13.

With conditions a little windy to begin with, a lot of competitors elected to fish inshore or stay within the more protected waters of Exmouth Gulf. As a result, most of the action was on queenfish and golden trevally within the gulf, and Spanish mackerel and small to mid-sized black marlin along the Ningaloo Reef.

Billfish stats –
Marlin 80-56-21
Sailfish 5-4-4

The highlight of the day was a pending junior WA record Spanish mackerel on 3kg line weighed in by Callum Horlock.

The weather forecast is for winds to ease right throughout the week, so we can expect the fishing action to heat up as the week-long tournament  progresses.

GAMEX Day 2, Monday March 14

The billfishing on Day 2 of GAMEX remained relatively quiet by Exmouth’s lofty standards, with black marlin in the 20-80kg range again making up most of the tag and release catch. With the wind beginning to abate, a few crews headed wider, looking for blues and big blacks beyond the continental shelf. Local fisho Peter Maier fishing aboard Zulu tagged a solid blue estimated at 280kgs.

Billfish stats –
Marlin 61-38-24
Sailfish 7-4-3

On the line class side of things, Mark Hourn weighed in a 5.3kg dolphinfish on 1kg gear fishing aboard Reel Obsession (pic above).
