Bertram 2013 Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic – slow start to the comp with only 6 fish recorded and a couple more dropped (as well as a couple self disqualified including one on Black Label that ate two baits) from the 30 boats competing.  Photo above from the shotgun start with the huge mothership Vava in view. Capt. Glen Hunter’s On Site got us off to a good start with a nice fish that Glen put at 700lbs for angler Graham.  After that, it was a trickle of smaller fish over the rest of the day for (in this order) Viking, Askari, Everwilling, Kanahoee and Althaldo.  Janice Eggins on Althaldo was the first female angler on the board. (These are my un-official results only:-)

Fishing for Day 2 of the 7 day comp resumes today at 11am. Follow the tweets here.

Outside the tournament off Townsville: I hear the Townsville Club boats had an epic weekend with plenty of yellowfin tun and dogtooth tuna action off Myrmidon Reef. O’Brien Boats Leigh and Pete O’Brien out on OB1 released a 200lb black marlin and had a bite out of another fish in the 600lb range while Leigh tells me that Mick Dykstra’s Real Crazy released two that they put at 200 and 700lbs!

I also heard that post tournament, a couple of the Weipa boats have been out and finding sails.
