North Queensland light tackle tournament season kicks off

It’s tournament season and it looks like the weather is giving teams an opportunity to pre-fish this week.

And for the 49 teams (yes that’s 49 teams!!!) fishing the Cairns Bluewater Billfish Tournament next week out of Fitzroy Island, here’s hoping it picks up again to the high that it has been earlier in the season.

As I mentioned, with the weather fining up, several are out fishing over the next few days although one who has been regularly out over the last week has been Captain Darren “Biggles” Haydon on Bounty Hunter who between mackerel fishing for clients have notched up a few. Biggs says that last Tuesday was the best day of the week going 2 from 4 while they added another 1 from 2 yesterday.

We are taking KEKOA out of the water today for the week so we will miss the action but we are joining the tournament next week so I will be ‘scoping (Periscope – sign up via your Twitter account for notifications of live broadcasts).  I’m planning to ‘scope the sailpast among other things, but leave me a comment below if anything else is of interest to you in broadcast form.

It’s good to see a few of the southern boats starting to arrive in time for the marlin season ahead including Capt. Tim Dean’s Calypso which is now firmly ensconced at the Cairns Marlin Marina.

Check the calendar for more events or if you have an event to add, email me the details.
