Little Bits from Cairns and Starting Down South

We’d hoped that the weather coming through would stir up some late season marlin off Cairns, but it seems they have mostly left the area now. There are still several sails around and smaller blacks being coverted on the laser pro’s bait fishing and on the ridge. Capt. Brett Goetze’s Reel Chase released this one yesterday on their way down the ridge and Brett said it put up a good fight on the light gear.

Lets hope that a few make themselves known for the ladies fishing the 30th Anniversary Ladies Ribbons tournament on Saturday!

Broken Bay GFC reported that three club boats Rampage, Murrifin and All Business fished almost perfect sea conditions on Sunday. Rampage converted one from two shark bites tagging a mako on 6kg line to junior angler Riley Page.

Murrifin meanwhile made the long run north east to an edge of water that showed on the chart late Saturday night and after seeing plenty of bait and bird life they ended the day with a 4-3-2 striped marlin (below) to anglers Troy Hamblin and another junior Jake Bennent – both fish were first marlins. They also had a crazy crash tackle on the teaser from a blue marlin that they were able to tease back to the transom for an explosive sideways bite on the pitch bait. Unfortunately the circle hook pulled a short time later.

The club also said there were reports of striped marlin and a spearfish south of Broken Bay. A very promising start to the summer season!
