Another year of hot Gold Coast light tackle fishing during the annual migration of black marlin is making this a destination not to miss over the summer! Some amazing numbers have been achieved this year and most recently this weekend in the Garmin Gold Coast Light Tackle Masters! (Reporting below.)

Here are some of the great individual results from the tournament below. Some quick points of note:

Champion Boat Over 8M: French Look III
Champion Boat Under 8M: Contender 25

The top 12 boats all tagged double figures of fish. In total 140 black marlin were tagged on Day 1 and 128 black marlin were tagged on Day 2 for a total of 268 black marlin for the two days!

There was a recapture on Day 1 of the comp with the boat  It’ll Do recapturing a black for angler Graham Gregory first tagged by Suzanne Malaquin on Adios on January 6 (10 days at liberty!).

Tournament Fishing

Congratulations to James Holt’s French Look III who took out the comp for the third year running. With fish pushing up to 100kg in some cases it was an amazing effort for a total of 22 tags all on 8kg.  They tagged 15 on Saturday and followed up on Sunday with 7.

Fishing their first comp in the new boat, Mat Stehman’s Nx Level also put in an awesome performance on 8kg with a total of 19 tags being 11 on Saturday and 8 on Sunday to take second place. Mat said it was an epic last day with three boats vying for the top spot!

Coming in third and driving Amigo for the comp, Ben Job reports they tagged 20 in the two days half on 8kg and half on 15kg being 9 from 11 on Day 1 and 11 from 12 on Day 2. A great photo of Amigo in action by Dan Bond at top!

Fourth place overall went to Capt. Brent James at the wheel of Vengeance (the old Reel Chase 😊) with 21 tags being 10 on Saturday and 11 on Sunday. As well as Champion Female for wife Hayley. Brent says while Hayley only fished the second day of the comp (and what a result for one day for her accounting for 9 of those tags!) they have now caught 42 in the last four days of fishing!!

Stuart Wright’s Gold Coast Game Fishing Contender 25 was right up there in 5th place ending the comp with 16 tags. On Day 1 they tagged 3 on 8kg and 7 on 15kg. On Day 2 they tagged 3 on 8kg and 3 on 15 with some larger models in there taking up much of the day fighting. Stuart said fishing on Day 1 was all four seasons in the day but were very happy to end up in 5th place with big congratulations and thank you to the club and sponsors for an outstanding comp.

Major Tournament Sponsor Garmin’s Wayne Thomsen and family on Witchway also fished a spectacular comp with 16 tags over the two days – 5 on Sat and 11 on Sunday for a hot finish!!
