Tournament Report: 2013 Yorkey’s Knob Light Tackle Slam

tournament-report-2013-yorkeys-knob-light-tackle-slam

Thanks to Jay Edwards for giving us the full round up of the comp!

Day 1 saw 10 knots of wind and a very comfortable fleet.

It wasn’t too long before Steve from Hellraiser 2 was calling through the first hookup, which was followed shortly after by the tag. I am told the fish came from the scum line south of Fitzroy Island. After a perfect switch, a great little fight was won by angler and new owner of The Boss, Mark Gladwin.
Kim Watton was next on the scoreboard after a fiery little black at the down rigger and was tagged on board Bada Bing, also caught out of the scum line this time in wide grounds.
Next came a fish for Nick Mason on board Imagine, followed shortly after by a second fish to Hellraiser 2, this time caught by Mark’s partner and co owner of the Boss Emily Griffen. The final fish of the day went to Jason Legg on board Simon Woolcott’s Savella.

Day 2 saw conditions deteriorate a little. With 15 knots that crept up slowly through the day to make it a bumpy ride home. The fishing slowed a little too, with a few people finding fish but not to many hooking them, and a lot that were hooked won their freedom with having a new tag as a prize for their efforts.
The first fish of Sunday went to the visiting president of the Mooloolaba GFC Nathan Douglas who was on Board Skylla with Captain Kim Andersen at the wheel. Nathan later won the “Greeny Award”for an incident where he was knocked out cold by the tender that fell from the roof and cleaned him up on the way out on the first day.

Captain Steve Ahlers (Hellraiser) then put Mark back onto another fish that put them clear in front of the pack. Ka-Ching finally called through a tag after have a bad run of luck with fish falling off regularly for the boys onboard.

As tournament base called cease fishing a mad radio call came through from Sweet Lorraine that they were hooked up. They later tagged the fish that was hooked literally seconds outside of tournament time. So bad luck to Sweet Lorraine but well done on catching the fish. This gave Ka-Ching the last billfish for the comp.

The final results:

Champion Boat Over All Hellraiser 2
Champion boat over 7.5m Hellraiser 2
Runner up  Imagine
Third Skylla

Hi Kelly

My old mans fishing Funchal in Madeira next week. Hopefully I may be able to send you some news. Captain Peter Bristow will be his charter. I believe he come from somewhere down your neck of the woods. Came reccomended from Marlin Magazine in USA and from a new fishing spot off Mozambique where a captain Duardo Nantes also reccomended him. Apparently they had a 1000lb blue there two weeks ago. It’s late in the season but there is still some good reports. Hopefully send you a report afterwards if he’s lucky. Thanks for all the great reports
Kevin
